Alone Doesn't Have to Mean Lonely

Learning to enjoy your own presence

Are you comfortable doing things by yourself? Would you be okay going to the beach, movies, or a restaurant without anyone else? Or does thinking about it make you cringe?

Almost everyone I’ve talked to prefers to do these things with friends rather than alone…

Me included.

With friends, we can joke around, share our thoughts, and overall have more fun. It seems like a no-brainer, right?

Well, as always, I’m here to challenge your thoughts…

Since many of us think being with friends is more fun than doing things alone, we always do things with friends (keyword: always).

That’s awesome and all, but we tend not to make time to do things alone.

You may be asking, “Why would I do things alone when it’s more fun with others?”

My answer: Just trust me.

No, I’m just kidding. My real answer is that doing things alone makes us more comfortable in our own presence. We are able to recenter ourselves and learn to enjoy things even when we are alone.

Speaking of the word alone, I think it gets a bad rap.

Most of us think that Alone = Lonely, but that is not the case.

We can be alone and still be fully content, sometimes even more so than when people are around us.

Now, I’m not saying to cut everyone out and do everything alone (far from it)...

I’m challenging you to do something by yourself that you would usually do with friends.

I don’t mean things like reading, or watching TV, or stuff like that…

Actually go out and do something. Go on a mini-vacation. Take a road trip. Do a hike.

Just try one thing and see how it makes you feel.

I hope you enjoyed this week’s shorter (but still very important) post.

As always, please don’t just read and go on your merry way. Actually do something.

If you have any feedback, please email me… I would love to hear it.

As you go about your week, just remember: Alone doesn’t have to mean lonely.

Keep making progress. Change for the better. Live the Heming-way.

See you next Monday,

Trevor
