Being vs. Doing
Earlier this week as I was sitting on my couch, I felt called to drive to the beach and do some reflection. Although it was late, I obliged, hopping the car with my Bible and journal.
I want to share some of the things I wrote down in the hopes that it helps you.
“I feel like God wants me to consider being vs. doing. It seems I’m obsessed with what I do instead of just being…At the end of the day, what I do matters less than who I truly am.”
I’m not saying that what you do doesn’t matter as long as you’re a ‘good person.’ Rather, I am reminding myself that God created me in His image and that nothing I do can change the degree to which He loves me.
I very often am disappointed in myself for not doing enough, whether that be going to the gym, working more hours, studying for exams earlier, etc.
However, I find that pursuing these things strictly leads to an unhealthy desire to accomplish more and more. I’m sure you’ve heard stories of rich, famous people getting everything they thought they wanted, only to feel empty. And I’m sure you’ve felt the same thing at least once in your life.
I find that when I put my value in my ‘being’ rather than my ‘doing,’ I feel that peace that transcends all understanding in my heart.
Does this mean we will be happier if we remain stagnant and do not work to achieve our goals? No!
It means that having more things does not necessarily correlate with being fulfilled.
I also wrote in my journal: “So if feelings arise in me contradicting this point, it’s my feelings that are mistaken, not the fact.”
This was regarding the fact that life is a gift. It may not feel like that all the time, but it truly is a gift from God.
All in all, this week I want to remind you to focus on your ‘isness’ rather than just what you do. Your actions become much clearer once you have established who you truly are down to the core.
Remember, nothing you do will make the Creator of the universe love you more. Rather, accepting what Jesus did for you and leaning into God’s love is what makes all the difference.
Keep making progress. Change for the better. Live the Heming-way.
Til next time,
Trevor
