Free Yourself
I’m sure you have many routines.
You probably drive the same way to work, do the same things for fun, and get ready in the same way every morning.
And this is a good thing. By having routines, we don’t have to constantly use time and energy to think of what to do. We already know.
However, after some reflection, I’ve noticed a potential drawback.
At times, when I do the same things I do every day, I’m not even fully conscious. Although I’m doing the things, I’m not fully there.
Have you ever been driving home and arrived without remembering the actual drive that got you there? When you’ve done something enough, your mind tends to go on autopilot.
Oftentimes we have so many routines where our minds are on autopilot. We just do the thing while time passes.
Here is what I concluded (This is the part where you get off autopilot and actually comprehend these words):
Although routines are a good thing for saving energy and creating stability, sometimes you have to switch things up.
Drive a different way to work, take a cold shower, or brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy, and it can be random as well. For example, last night I slept on my couch even though I have a bed.
You may call me weird, and maybe so. But the point is to remind yourself that you are in full control of your life. You aren’t tied to your routines. You can do whatever you want.
You can go run a marathon right now. You can take a walk. You can do cartwheels at your local park wearing all neon yellow clothes. Not that I would do that, but nothing is stopping you.
Change things up every once in a while, and remind yourself that you can do whatever you want. Just because you’ve done something the same way your whole life, doesn’t mean you have to do it that way today.
Realize this, and you are free.
Keep making progress. Change for the better. Live the Heming-way
Til next time,
Trevor
