Hope
As the new year approaches, hundreds of millions of people around the globe are preparing their new year’s resolutions.
But in my experience, not a single one has ever brought consistent progress in my life. Probably because I quit after a week.
However, this year I have a refined outlook on the new year and would like to share it with you:
Instead of having a clear goal I want to reach or a specific habit I want to practice, I’m focusing on a change in attitude.
Now there are some potential drawbacks of this approach, mainly the difficulty in keeping track of my progress without a clear end goal.
But being able to work towards an unchanging virtue is, in my opinion, more beneficial for me than following a list of tasks which make me feel better about myself. I find myself just checking boxes rather than working towards something greater.
And this year, the virtue I want to focus on is simple yet powerful:
Hope.
Having an attitude of hopefulness and trust that things are going to work out as they are planned to. Being optimistic about what is to come and being thankful for the ability to look forward to the future. Striving to calm my anxieties and fears, instead focusing on prayer about what is to come.
This is my approach to the new year.
Now if you have a track record of keeping new year’s resolutions and it works for you, then by all means call me an idiot and click off this post.
But if you're like me and find it almost impossible to be consistent with your new habits, I urge you to think about changing your perspective. You may benefit more from focusing on a good virtue.
As always, I share my thoughts and ideas which I’m putting into practice in the hopes that it helps some of you dear readers.
All I want is for you to reflect on these things so you can make better decision about where your life is headed.
I wish all of you a happy new year and I’ll be praying for you.
Keep making progress. Change for the better. Live the Heming-way.
Til next time,
Trevor
