When I was younger, many people asked me, “What is your goal in life?”
Every time, I would answer the same way: “I want to be happy”
My thought process was simple: I feel good when I’m happy, and I don’t have to worry about negative feelings life loss, grief, depression, anxiety, and overall suffering. I mean, who wants to feel bad?
Last I checked people don’t usually get home after a long day of work and say, “Man I could really use some more stress right now.”
As I’ve grown up and matured in faith, I realize there is more to the story. The more I imagined a life of happiness, the more I realized it wasn’t really what I wanted. I concluded that without experiencing a full range of emotions, I wouldn’t experience a fulfilling life.
I want to use this week’s post as a reminder to myself why The Hemingway Post exists:
To authentically share my thoughts, ideas, and self-reflections on life in the hopes of helping/inspiring others.
With that being said, I want to be open and honest with you: I continuously struggle.
Not so much outwardly, but inwardly. I am working through things, I sometimes face low self-esteem, other times I am angry with myself, or I’m dealing with the negative feelings listed earlier.
The question that always comes from this realization is one simple word:
Why?
I ask myself why I am dealing with these problems. What is the end goal? What is the purpose?
And unlike my younger self, my purpose no longer lies in the fleeting feeling of happiness, but it resides in the hope I have in Jesus Christ.
It doesn’t rely on the feelings I want, rather it is my North Star through all the feelings I experience.
The big takeaway from this week is to understand that you’re not alone. Now you know at least one other person is working through problems just like you (and spoiler alert, I’m not the only one).
The Hemingway Post has been a platform for me to organize my understandings and lend a helping hand to those who need it.

This week, I challenge you to reflect on your purpose. What is the main thing in your life that you would suffer for? Maybe it’s becoming a doctor so you can help the sick. Maybe it’s being a stay-at-home mom and raising your kids. Maybe it’s following your religion and strengthening your faith.
Whatever it may be, write it down, hold it close, and never lose hope.
Keep making progress. Change for the better. Live the Heming-way.
Til next time,
Trevor
